The Hotel Congress, a beloved Tucson landmark for nearly 100 years, recently participated in Tucson Electric Power’s EasySave program by adding modern, high-efficiency air conditioning units.
The air conditioning upgrade was part of a series of green initiatives by the hotel, which included installing in-room ceiling fans and an on-site food composting program. One of the last things needed was to modernize the outdated 1930s evaporative cooling system.
“Working with TEP energy efficiency experts, the hotel installed 40 in-room AC mini splits, a 2-ton AC unit and programmable thermostats,” Hotel Congress General Manager Todd Hanley said. “We wanted to modernize the hotel for our guests’ comfort and also be environmentally and cost conscious.”
Installing the new air conditioners earned the hotel a $4,320 energy-efficiency rebate and will reduce its energy costs by approximately $14,000 per year.
“Take a look at TEP’s EasySave program, whether you own newer construction or a historic landmark like Hotel Congress,” TEP Commercial Energy Advisor Randy Altergott said.
