Mercedes Meraz’s house wasn’t well insulated, making it hard to maintain a comfortable temperature.
But she and her husband, who are on a fixed income, were unable to pay for upgrades to seal the drafts in their eastside house.
Then, one of Meraz’s hairdressing clients told her about TEP’s Weatherization Assistance program, which offers home repairs and upgrades at no cost to low-income residents. “It was hard to believe,” Mercedes said.
TEP works with community assistance agencies to help low-income customers reduce their energy expenses by retrofitting their homes. Improvements differ depending on the type and condition of the houses, but work can include upgrades such as insulation, sunscreens, and weather-stripping.
Weatherization improves a home’s energy efficiency, making it more comfortable while reducing our community’s long-term need for new energy resources. About 80 customers a year receive weatherization assistance through our program.
After Meraz signed up and qualified for the program, crews added new insulation to her home, fixed her doors and put screens on her windows. They also swapped out her old refrigerator for one that operates far more efficiently.
“This is the first time that we’ve ever asked for help, but it has helped a lot,” said Meraz, 72.
Meraz and her husband, Joaquin, have lived in the house for about 10 years. Joaquin, 78, has been disabled for years after sustaining long-term injuries as a carpet layer.
The couple’s primary income is Social Security payments, which Mercedes supplements with her work as a stylist. Their grown children live in Texas.
Meraz is grateful for the assistance and recommends the program to others.
“I say thanks to all of the companies working together to help us,” Meraz said.
TEP also offers energy conservation workshops in cooperation with community assistance agencies to teach limited-income customers how to utilize energy more efficiently and gain greater control over their energy bills.
TEP also offers Lifeline program discounts for those with limited incomes and short-term assistance for qualifying customers who are in financial distress.
