Community invited to these fun, low or no-cost family events Saturdays in August

Tucson, Ariz. – In celebration of its 125th year of service to the Tucson community, Tucson Electric Power (TEP) will present a series of fun, low- or no-cost events for families to enjoy every Saturday in August.

The 125th anniversary events kick off on Saturday, Aug. 5 with Summer Safari Night from 6-8 p.m. at Reid Park Zoo. For just $1.25 general admission, families can visit artifact stations, experience animal encounters, chat with zookeepers, and learn more about TEP. The event also offers live music, children’s activities, and special discounts at the zoo.

On Aug. 12, TEP presents Free Family Fun at the Fox Movies. Participants can watch cartoons at Fox Theatre on the big screen in air-conditioned comfort from 3-6:30 p.m. followed by a showing of the classic movie, “South Pacific,” at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free and on a first-come, first-seated basis. A small popcorn will be available for just $1.25. Other concessions also will be available for purchase.

TEP’s Saturday events continue on Aug. 19 with Solar Saturday at the Children’s Museums of Tucson and Oro Valley from 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. For $1.25 general admission, children and adults alike can explore the interactive, hands-on exhibits on energy and solar power that promote a greater understanding and appreciation of science. Participants can visit TEP’s solar-powered trailer for updates on the company’s solar energy systems, tour the TEP-sponsored Electri-city exhibit, and watch a demonstration that explains what happens when the sun vanishes in the middle of the day during the upcoming total solar eclipse on Aug. 21. Get free special glasses for safely viewing the eclipse.

For the final Saturday event on Aug. 26, TEP partners with Chicanos por la Causa and Saguaro National Park West to present Saguaro Sunset Serenata, a free celebration of nature and music under the stars from 6-9 p.m. at the Saguaro National Park West Visitors Center. The event will feature food and drink vendors, live music and desert wildlife demonstrations by park staff. Attendees also will have the chance to star gaze through telescopes and take a short hike with black lights to explore desert night life and historic petroglyphs. All families attending the event will receive a free park pass for future use, compliments of the park. Due to limited parking at the Visitor Center, interested attendees are asked to carpool to the park, if possible, and are asked to reserve their spot by calling (520) 733-5158. Designated parking spaces are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Events are subject to change, and outdoor events are subject to cancelation due to inclement weather. Please contact event locations with questions concerning ADA accommodations, parking and policies.
