News Release: October 19, 2017

Tucson, Ariz. – To commemorate 125 years of service to our community, Tucson Electric Power (TEP) will team up with Habitat for Humanity Tucson and Literacy Connects for a Day of Service from 7:30-11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 28 in the Amphi neighborhood in central Tucson.

TEP employee volunteers will help the agencies build Minton Court, a new nine-home affordable housing development near Literacy Connects’ program center at 200 East Yavapai Road.

Volunteers will paint, weed, pick up debris, trim trees, break up concrete and level soil to prepare sites for the new Habitat homes and an expanded parking lot for Literacy Connects.

Area residents are invited to attend the 8 a.m. groundbreaking ceremony and visit Habitat’s informational booth to learn more about the Minton Court project and its homeowner services.

The event will feature additional activities for children ages 6 and older, such as games, sidewalk chalk drawing, face painting and storytelling by Stories that Soar at 10 a.m. At 10:30 a.m., TEP will serve birthday cupcakes to celebrate its 125th anniversary. TEP’s solar trailer also will be on site, providing solar-powered TV screens and video games.

The Tucson Fire Department will have a fire engine on display and will provide information about its new Tucson Community Collaborative Care (TC3) program, which refers residents to community support services.

“Volunteerism and community service have always been at the heart of our corporate culture,” said TEP President and CEO David G. Hutchens. “It will be my honor to work alongside colleagues and community partners to help revitalize this neighborhood and extend a long TEP tradition of improving the quality of life in our community.”

TEP’s Day of Service is part of its yearlong celebration of 125 years of service to Tucson. TEP contributes $1.5 million annually to local charities from its corporate resources, not customers’ rates. The company also contributes significant in-kind support, and employees volunteer thousands of hours each year to causes across our community.

Founded in 1892, TEP provides safe, reliable electric service to nearly 420,000 customers in Southern Arizona. TEP and its parent company, UNS Energy, are subsidiaries of Fortis Inc., which owns utilities that serve more than 3 million customers across Canada and in the United States and the Caribbean.
