PowerShift
Residential PowerShift
Take control of electricity usage with the PowerShift time-of-use monthly pricing plan.

Sometimes, just by changing when we do things we can save money. Like flying a "redeye," getting summer hotel rates or going to a matinee movie. Now you can get the same kind of non-prime-time discounts from Tucson Electric Power Company. It’s all part of the TEP PowerShift™ time-of-use monthly pricing program.

The first step to saving under PowerShift is conservation – eliminate unnecessary energy usage and use energy-efficient equipment and lighting. Then, by shifting the bulk of your remaining peak (highest-priced) and shoulder (mid-priced) electricity usage to off-peak (lowest-priced) you will save money and help support a cleaner environment. So first conserve – then shift.

A new way to reduce your electric bill. And help the environment, too.

At TEP, at least during summer hours, avoiding "prime time" means minimizing usage during the hot Arizona afternoons, when demand skyrockets, and the market price of electricity soars. By reducing the daytime demand, you also help conserve energy and protect the environment. It's the ultimate $GREEN thing to do.

By shifting when you use certain equipment to off-peak hours, we can help you save. This means choosing to run equipment during the (lowest-priced) off-peak hours.

An average small business customer, shifting one-third of peak and shoulder usage to off-peak can save more than 6 percent on his or her annual electric bill. Savings will vary based on individual usage patterns.

How does PowerShift work?
If you can shift equipment use and other electricity-consuming activities to specific times of the day or eliminate some usage entirely then you are a prime candidate for money-saving PowerShift rates.

With PowerShift, the time of day when you use kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity will determine how much you pay for them. Setting up this time-of-use pricing plan is free, including the installation of a new electric meter. The new meter will track the number of kWh you use and the time of day you use them. The time-of-use meter can tell TEP how many kWh have been used during the Peak, Shoulder, or Off-Peak periods. When calculating the bill, TEP will apply the Peak rate to Peak kWh, the Shoulder rate to Shoulder kWh and the Off-peak rate to Off-Peak kWh.

Is PowerShift right for your business?

It may depend on whether air conditioning accounts for the bulk of your electricity usage, and whether you can realistically limit its use.

Some of the many factors that may affect your decision regarding PowerShift are:

  • Is your primary use of electricity for production or manufacturing activities that run during multiple shifts, including early morning or nighttime?
  • Does your business operate refrigeration equipment (food storage, for example) that accounts for 20 percent or more of your electricity usage? Such equipment operates “off and on” over an entire 24 hour period.
  • Does your business rely on evaporative cooling or fans for summer cooling?
  • Do you use electric space heating? And could you reduce usage during peak winter morning periods of 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and peak winter evening periods of 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.?
  • Do you use an Energy Management System (EMS)?
  • Is your business a winter-only or nighttime-only operation?
